Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald(Emerald became an actual ore in minecraft.) are three gems added by Redpower. The gems can be acquired by mining their respective ores. You can use them to create tools that have a mining speed the same as that of diamond tools (however the pickaxe cannot mine obsidian), and have about a third of the durability of diamond. It is recommended to use the gems in order to create tools, so you can spend your diamonds on other items.

Gems can be transmuted in the Transmutation Tablet from Equivalent Exchange. Each gem has an EMC value of 1024.

Unlike most other mod-added tools and weapons, the tools and weapons created with gems can be enchanted.

Ore and Storage Blocks[]

Redpower-gems

Ore blocks and storage blocks of all three Redpower gems.

Redpower gems can be encountered on all height levels up to Y=64. If you put nine gems into the crafting grid, you can create a storage block, which can be placed for decorative purposes. The gems can be reclaimed by placing the storage block in the crafting area. Ten can be mined in a "vein". Please note that the emeralds added by Redpower cannot be used to trade with testificates (default villagers).

Handsaw[]

Handsaws are required to create small blocks for covering wires and decoration. The iron version will only work on softer materials, the saws made from gems (including diamonds) will cut almost any solid block. Take a look at the Cutting Recipes page to see what can be done. Note that the Gem Handsaws cannot cut Obsidian blocks or silicon boules; you will need a Diamond Handsaw for that.
