This is a quick guide on how to begin playing the Technic pack. This guide will assume you are playing on survival or hardcore without the difficulty on peaceful.

First step

As soon as you spawn have a look at the lay of the land with Rei's Minimap. The first few tasks are exactly the same as those in vanilla. You must gather wood, acquire food and find shelter.

Gathering wood

The process of looting trees has become a lot more simple in the Technic pack due to the inclusion of DraftPV's Treecapitator mod. Get three wood blocks by punching a tree with your bare hands, then make a crafting table and an axe. To collect all of the wood from an entire tree easily, simply destroy the bottom block, and the tree will collapse into all of its components. (This will not work on the small and big rubber trees). This is a quick way to collect a large amount of wood. Remember to never use rubber trees for planks, since later on you'll be able to make some cool machines that make rubber trees a lot more useful.

Finding shelter

Treehouse: The redpower rubberwood trees are enormous, will not burn and are quick to mine, making them ideal for making a treehouse. The trunks are 3 by 3 blocks, so you can put a spiral staircase around the outside or use ladders straight up the middle. You can then hollow out the foliage and have a lovely base. The disadvantages of this course is that it makes it harder to put mine access in your house, and extend the house if ever you need more space. Of course you could also mine DOWN from the treehouse's trunk and build a versatile base system.

Cave house: Finding a cave and putting a wall/roof on is a really quick and easy way of building a house, as it only requires you to build a small amount, most of the work is done for you. The main two types are horizontal cave houses, where you build the front wall and use a door to get in and out, and vertical cave houses, where you build the roof and use ladders and hatches for access. If you do make a cave house, make sure that if the cave extends underground, you block it off to stop monsters attacking. While this is a bother on the first night it can come in handy having a tunnel system connected to your house later on.

Regular house: There is nothing wrong with building a regular house to spend your first night. However you may wish to extend the house underground later on to make room for the many machines you will make.

Cliff house: You may not feel like doing all of the above, so you may dig a good sized shelter into a cliff, block up the front, and add a door. This type of house tends to be able to house a large amount of machines.

The first night

Before night falls, make sure you grab some stone and coal to make stone tools and torches with that wood you got. At night, the regular monsters come out, plus a whole bunch of Mo' Creatures mobs. For more info about what dangerous mobs you might encounter, go here.

If you wish to fight mobs to get resources, you have a wide choice of weapons. Balkons weapons mod provides a wide array of choices, even for the beginner. With basic resources you can make a halberd for a dynamic fighting style, a warhammer for huge damage, a spear for ranged combat, and a dagger if resources are tight. Or of course you can stick with the good ol' sword. Be careful about werewolves as they take about 10 hits from a gold sword to kill. Any other weapon deals almost no damage whatsoever. If you want to play safe, always kill a couple of sheep at daytime and build a bed first thing after you have built your home which you should always do simply to skip the night. Another feature of Technic is that the world will be simulated while you are asleep, unlike vanilla. This means that while you are asleep, crops still grow and food still cooks, the downside is that you also can get very hungry. Ogres can destroy your homes and they are quite hard to kill, so make sure to make your home out of their reach.  Your house also needs a roof because there are wraiths , which act like flying zombies and drop gunpowder.  Mind you, if you don't like these mobs, or want more of them, you can pause the game, go to options, global mod settings, DrZhark's Mo'Creatures and choose what difficulty specific aggresive mobs will spawn. You can also change how frequently they spawn.

Getting established

Rubber tree farming

It is incredibly important that you start a rubber farm, as rubber is essential for loads of the machines we will be making. If you have not yet seen any rubber trees, search for them until you find some. To view the full process of rubber tree farming, go here. It is also quite important that you make  a treetap.

Mining resources

The next step is to begin mining resources. If you feel like mining in caves, go to your map, and click the third option, which should be saying surface. Once you click it, it should say biome. Click it again, and it will say cave.  Exit the menu and look for black on the map.  Squares are dungeons, long lines are mineshafts, and everything else is a cave or ravine. When mining with the Technic Pack you will discover far more stuff far more frequently than in vanilla, due to the increased amount of ores. The vanilla ores still spawn with the same frequency, but as they have more uses it is advised you use them with greater care. Other materials you will likely find in the upper levels of the ground are copper, which looks orange-brown, tin, which looks gray, uranium, which looks green, and marble, a pale white-brown. Other ores you may find are cinnabar, which has red ovals, nikolite, which is light blue like diamond, silver, which looks -wait for it- Silver, and tungsten, which looks almost exactly like coal. Copper and tin are essential for the first machines. Marble can be used to build a wall that cannot be destroyed by Ogres. Uranium is not used until much later. If you get deep enough to find any rubies, saphires, or emeralds, you should use these for tools since that's the only use they have. They are just as fast as diamond and have better durability than iron. Also, mine lapis and gold, because they become very useful in technic. Once you get some iron a good step is to make an iron furnace, as it is faster and more coal effecient. But don't smelt your ores until you need them! Some ores are not compatible with this machine, like cinnabar and tungsten. Later on we will make a machine that will double your ores, so only smelt what is necessary for what you are making. This will enable you to double your loot from ores by making 2 dusts from 1 ore and is then smelted in the furnace. More good machines to have early on are the Extractor,

You should build an extractor first, as waiting for six more sap holes to refill so you can make another Electronic Circuit can really get on an engineer's nerves.

Note: if you make the macerator first you can power it using redstone dust until you get a generator, although it is horribly ineffecient. Put in only one dust at a time!

Further paths

Now you are really far in your world, there are only a few paths you can travel down. You can become a master alchemist without Equivalent Exchange , or a redstone person with RedpowerII. Combine Redpower 2 with  Thaumcraft to make a super base. Become a farmer with farming overhaul, Minefactory and Thaumcraft. Become a genius and pump items everwhere. Build a massive safeway with Railcraft. Generate big amounts of power with IndustrialCraft's nuclear power, and make yourself strong with the tools gained from massive energy. The great thing is, all these mods are chosen because they work very good together, and with tweaks like power converters they are compatible. Whatever you do, have fun with this!
